The Langham Custom House: Bangkok’s 1888 Landmark Hotel
In 1888, ships arriving in Bangkok cleared customs at a pale, colonnaded building on the east bank of the Chao Phraya. Cargo was weighed there and duties were paid, and for decades it was the kingdom’s front door.
Chulalongkorn, Siam’s modernizing king, ordered it built, while Joachim Grassi, an Italian architect, drew the neo-Palladian facade. Customs moved downriver to Khlong Toei in 1949, and the building drifted. Marine police, then firefighters and their families, lived in it while the plaster cracked
On December 20, 2026, it reopens as The Langham, Custom House, Bangkok. Reservations are already open.
A Landmark Bangkok Watched Fade
For years the Old Customs House was the building photographers loved and preservationists worried about. A restoration concession signed in 2005 went nowhere for more than a decade, and Aman was attached to the project at one point. It finally landed with Langham Hospitality Group, which has made the original structure the heart of the hotel.
The teak floors stay, so do the grand central staircase and the four-storey hallway running through the old building. The former post office next door has been folded in as well and now holds much of the public space. For most of the last century, almost nobody outside the police and fire services got to climb that staircase.
Rooms in the River Wing
There are 75 keys: 60 guest rooms and 15 suites, set in a new wing designed by Smith Obayawat of the Bangkok studio OBA. Its curving form is meant to follow the movement of the river, which makes sense once you see how much of the site faces the water. Langham’s footprint here is one of the largest on Bangkok’s riverfront.
The details lean into the building’s history as Siam’s gateway for trade. Bathtubs are sculpted with references to coinage and gilded finishes. Geometric etching borrows from Thai temple mosaics, and the lighting reworks royal emblems and ceremonial weaponry into something you’d happily sleep under.

T’ang Court Comes to Bangkok
Plenty of people will book their first night here for dinner. Langham is bringing T’ang Court, the Cantonese dining room at The Langham, Hong Kong that holds three Michelin stars, into the restored Custom House. In a food city as competitive as Bangkok, that’s a serious opening move.
There’s also a destination bar, a pastry counter and a river-facing ballroom, with more concepts still to be announced. Chuan Spa, Langham’s spa rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, handles wellness. The gym is the first in Asia fitted with Technogym’s Sandstone collection.
Our advice: ask for your T’ang Court table at the same time you book the room. Opening-season tables at a three-star outpost won’t wait for you to land.

Charoen Krung on Foot
Find it off Charoen Krung Soi 36, which is Bangkok’s first paved road. The Haroon Mosque is right there. The French Embassy is close, and Assumption Cathedral is a short stroll. A few minutes north, Warehouse 30 has turned old riverside godowns into galleries and design shops. This stretch of Bang Rak has become the city’s creative district while keeping the shophouses and roast duck counters that were here first.
Go with a private guide who reads buildings for a living. Merchants and traders settled along this bend generations ago. Their buildings are easy to walk past if nobody points them out. At sunset, a private longtail runs toward Wat Arun and the Grand Palace. Finish at the riverside bar, in a building that once met the ships.
Bangkok’s cool, dry season runs roughly November through February. Late December or January is the easiest time to walk it.

Access granted

Opening-season stays at a 75-key hotel tend to book out around the holidays, and the river-facing rooms go first.
Our Travel Designers can hold the right room and line up your T’ang Court reservation. They’ll also bring in a private architecture guide and a sunset boat, then build the rest of Thailand around Bangkok, from Chiang Mai to a few slow days on the Andaman coast.
Ask Our Travel Designers to hold a river-facing room at Custom House for the opening season.
