Edge of the Ice
In the world’s largest island, towering icebergs drift past fishing villages painted in reds and blues, and silence stretches for miles beneath the midnight sun or the northern lights. Greenland remains one of the last true frontiers, now accessible through small-ship expeditions and intimate luxury lodges.
Begin in Ilulissat, gateway to the UNESCO-listed Ilulissat Icefjord, where massive icebergs calved from the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier drift silently toward the sea, best seen by private boat or helicopter at golden hour. Continue to the fishing village of Oqaatsut and the remote settlement of Uummannaq, where traditional Greenlandic and Inuit culture remains deeply intact, and dog-sledding or boat excursions reveal a landscape virtually untouched by modern development. A stay aboard a small luxury expedition ship allows access to fjords and settlements unreachable by road, with onboard naturalists guiding wildlife spotting for humpback whales, seals, and seabirds. Evenings bring fresh Arctic char and musk ox prepared by onboard chefs, often followed by aurora viewing from the deck under some of the darkest skies on earth.

“The hotel our travel designer recommended was one we never would have chosen on our own, and it ended up shaping our entire trip. We’re thrilled!”
